I was born a few miles outside of Sunderland, had my first job there in the 60's, went to college there pre-Uni, supported the football team and was proud of and part of the industrial life of shipbuilding, steel, glass making, coal mining, heavy industry and R&D. 

Some of my family still live there. From my distant viewpoint, and I may be wrong, it has never recovered from the sudden enforced deindustrialisation during the mid- 80's. European money provided some respite, but perversely Sunderland was a stronghold of 'Leave' 

For the youth growing up I can only imagine their feelings of being left behind, just the feelings that the EDL and other extremists exploit.

I fear that unless we as a country can bring hope and prosperity or at least the hope of prosperity to so many left behind cities that many other cities will become breeding grounds for the extremists.
