In Bradford on Avon we got rid of separate 'gents' and 'ladies' toilet blocks back in 2002/03 when we had a big redevelopment, and replaced them with individual unisex toilet cubicles (3 standard, 1 accessible). Our main meeting room now stretches into the area that used to be the 'gents'.

By the way, I find the phrase "self-contained, and therefore single-sex" in the linked document rather confusing. My first reaction was: shouldn't it therefore non-sex-specific? or unisex? or whatever you want to call it? Okay, after thinking it through a bit, I understand that what is meant is that if you use the self-contained cubicle for its intended purpose, it will never be used by people of more than one sex or gender at the same time - but I feel that it required a bit of twisting my brain to get there.

Best wishes,

When Lewes Meeting had extensive work done 18 months ago it chose to have non-designated toilets plus a fully accessible bathroom for wheelchair users. Non of our hirers have any issues with this arrangement.

Hi Wendrie

In Lancaster we have 5 individual self contained toilet cubicles, 3 are on the ground floor, one of which is wheelchair accessible; none of those 5 are gender specific.  Then we have one assigned space for women with 2 cubicles and one assigned space for men, with just one cubicle.  Last year we got rid of the urinal that was in that space in order to reconfigure the area to add some storage space for Trustees documents.   I questioned why we  had specifically assigned toilets, whether we could make better use of the area the 2 rooms with a total of 3 assigned toilet cubicles etc take up and just create 3 self contained, non assigned toilets, and a kitchenette and storage space.  It was agreed that would be better use of the space, but some Friends felt it was important to retain the few assigned toilets, for those who 'needed' them.  We do not monitor, in any way whatsoever, who uses which toilets.  And I have never heard any of our users make any complaint or comment about our toilet facilities  (other than delight that they're always clean).

All the best

Subject: [wardenship] toilet signage

Hello Friends,

Was asked if any meeting house is thinking of changing their signs for toilet facilities either in response to the ECHR guidelines or the recent statement on toilet facilities by Paul Parker at Yearly Meeting.

The client who asked has a small building with two signposted bathrooms and one accessible, and has been planning a refurbishment for a couple of years.

Are people thinking of moving forward to individual toilet cubicles? Has anyone already done this?

Yours in peace,

Wendrie Heywood
