Hello

From these exchanges I was prompted to check with our lift company what charge there would be if someone were to become trapped in the lift.

They replied
"If an entrapment happens there will be a cost for a callout to be attend and this would be £410.61 excluding VAT this is because you have a standard contract."

There would be further costs to repair any fault that had caused the entrapment.
We are with KONE UK.

My next line of enquiry will be to our insurers to see if we could claimn this back under our policy.

A call-out charge of over 2,000 pounds sounds completely ludircous to me!

This is going back a bit in time, but when I was working at Chelsea Methodist Centre, we had a service contract for the lift, and whenever it broke down, they had to send someone free of charge - this was part of the contract. And when their cowboy engineers repeatedly failed to get the lift fixed, I threatened the service company with legal action for breach of contract as my last task on a Wednesday afternoon, giving them until Friday 5pm to get the lift working again. Thursday 8am, a couple of different and much more competent engineers turned up at the church (which didn't open until 9)j, and the lift was working again by the end of the day. No charge, it was part of the service contract. Clearly this is how it should be.

Best wishes,

Hi Matthew,
Thanks, yes we have these things in place.
The call out charge is over £2000.

Hello

I'm a bit confused by this thread

My understanding is that all lifts need to be insured and that they require regular servicing / maintenance in order to be used.
I also thought that they require an adequate alarm system in case the lift fails and people are trapped.
I didn't think you could operate a lift without these things in place.
Northumbria AM have maintenance / service contracts with a lift company that includes call outs for breakdowns though I don't know what the callout might cost. The lift also has an intercom system that alerts the lift company directly.
We also do not allow anyone to travel in the lift if they are the only person in the building.
