Dear Margot, A donations device is a gadget connected to a payment device (aka card reader), which generally has a user-friendly screen, for donors to see information about who is inviting them to donate for what cause, choose exactly how much they want to donate, add gift aid, etc, and which allows charities to gather information about their fund-raising success. At the risk of asking a stupid question: what's a donations device? x ML, clerk to trustees, Teesdale and Cleveland, but just for another 2 months....

An update from Winchester Meeting: We have a SumUp card machine - linked to a DONA donations device. Upfront cost: over £400. DONA charge: £15 per month. SumUp processing: 1.69% (didn't take it for first 4 months). We have recovered the initial outlay, and we are getting more than £15 in each month, so it seems worth it. But that won't apply to all Meetings. Our Treasurer was very sceptical, but is now convinced. I believe it is easy to account for monies received / pass info to book-keeper/accountant. The donations device is very user-friendly, and useful if
- you want to take donations for different things, e.g. refreshments/repairs - you appreciate having lots of information about donations, e.g. how much for different causes / month-by-month / graphs, etc - you want to receive the 25% gift aid, and have it all calculated for you - you like being able to phone someone if you have a query (good customer service)
As for the question about giving having increased or not - I certainly have the impression that it has, but I don't have the earlier figures. Maybe we can see this more clearly when the annual accounts are prepared. Having a card-reader definitely seems to be the way to go (with or without a donations device), as so many people no longer carry cash, and paying cash into the bank takes time, and banks are moving away from accepting cash.
All the best, Lorraine

Here at Jesus Lane Cambridge we use Sum Up and for ease of book keeping we have two payment terminals one for our weekly charity collections and one for donations to the meeting itself for tea/coffee, soup lunch on wednesdays and any other donations - for example currently White Poppies.
Cost was about £100 each to set up to run using our wifi (SUM up phone linked terminals are cheaper)
Charitable giving has DEFINITELY increased significantly each week and Friends are glad of the opportunity to use their card to make a donation for refreshments etc
A 1.69% fee is charged on each transaction by Sum Up. This is around 8p for a £5 donation. We feel it is well worth it.
Easy to set up.

Hi Judi
I have nothing to add to this conversation other than: I'm still interested in this conversation and information. Lancaster are still considering their options, but the Treasurer does not seem to be particularly interested in taking it further. I would love to be able to take a list of who uses what and how successful the various options have been. I'd love to know how affordable the different systems are; how users friendly they are, and how the various Meetings account for the money that is paid using the various systems - ie how much staff/volunteer time is saved vs needed; and can anyone show evidence that using card machines have resulted in an increase in giving. I'd also still be interested to hear whether any Meetings have been using a card payment method that works well for room hire payments as well as donations and collections etc.
Sorry I can't be of any help.
Tasha
