Jane With my wife, I've done the warden's job at Yealand with a MH and building used as a simple hostel, and am now convenor of premises, and am only too aware how easily this becomes a 7 day job, with emails coming in at any time, and phone calls over a long period of everyday. You do need some escape from this, and that either means no bookings, and set times when at least the meeting know its your time off, or someone else (hopefully paid) covering all aspects of the job that have to be done during periods when you are definitely not 'at work' So we do turn down bookings, because the economics don't run to having 7 day cover, but this needs discussion with the committee. Some groups need very little supervision, others the opposite! You can put times when someone is available for email or phone on your website. At Watford Quaker Meeting House we have groups hiring our rooms and the garden throughout the week, also Saturdays. I have been asked by a local Romanian Christian group whether they could book once a month on a Sunday afternoon. (A couple of rooms including the Children’s Room.) For years we given space to the local Unitarian Fellowship on a Sunday, once a month. This seems to work fine. I live directly upstairs from the Meeting House and can hear furniture being moved and the extractor fans in the toilets etc ! I would love to take on the Romanian Christian Group who are eager for the space but my dilemma is that Sundays afternoons are a time to stop and rest. My question is: Do other Meeting Houses book groups on Sunday afternoons? Is there an expectation to do this from your Meeting ? Would this work if this was passed on to another person to clear away afterwards? Or can the Meeting House building just have a quiet afternoon ? (After the occasional shared lunch and talks of course.)

Hello Friends, Just pitching in here... I do lettings admin here at Forest Hill Meeting House on a very part-time basis ... about 4 hours a week (occasionally more). We don't let out on Sundays mainly because mornings are MfW and then we say it's only for meeting activities the rest of the day - like shared lunch and committee meetings. Our cleaner also likes to do cleaning on Sunday afternoons in prep for the week. Most of our groups and individuals like the counsellors are regular and self-serving in the main which means we don't need someone onsite to supervise and in the main most are very good at putting stuff away and clearing up after themselves. We find the regular room hirers feel a sense of investment and pride in using the space and are very good at looking after it and also reporting issues to us. Anyway, hope that is helpful.
