I was born a few miles outside of Sunderland, had my first job there in the 60's, went to college there pre-Uni, supported the football team and was proud of and part of the industrial life of shipbuilding, steel, glass making, coal mining, heavy industry and R&D. Some of my family still live there. From my distant viewpoint, and I may be wrong, it has never recovered from the sudden enforced deindustrialisation during the mid- 80's. European money provided some respite, but perversely Sunderland was a stronghold of 'Leave' For the youth growing up I can only imagine their feelings of being left behind, just the feelings that the EDL and other extremists exploit. I fear that unless we as a country can bring hope and prosperity or at least the hope of prosperity to so many left behind cities that many other cities will become breeding grounds for the extremists. I think a lot of us are working out what we need to consider, in light of the advertised potential for violence tomorrow, Wednesday, including whether we host - eg - refugee welcome events that are publicly advertised (lots aren't) that might be seen as particular targets by the perpetrators of this kind of racist violence, and what emergency precautions we then need to think about to keep those events safe. It's also worth considering, if you have cleaners that usually come overnight when the building is shut, and if your MH is located somewhere anywhere near a projected hotspot, whether you'd like to give them Wednesday night off. with all my best, Lorna.
